Major Release of ABBYY FlexiCapture 9 Desktop & Distributed


ABBYY has just released a new major version of their data capture software for single user and distributed multi-user environments.  Those of you on FlexiCapture 8 Professional are familiar with the name, but others using FormReader 6.5 Enterprise will be upgrading to their new version under the FlexiCapture name. 

What was formerly known as FlexiCapture in multi-user environment is now referred to as FlexiLayout.  This is the unstructured document data capture layer of the software for non-standardized layouts of documents as you generally see in purchase orders, invoices, bills of lading, oil and gas reports, etc. coming from various customers, vendors, and other suppliers in their own unique format.  FlexiLayout allows you to look for specific alphanumeric patterns to capture or to use as labels indicating the presence of the data you'd like to capture, such as PO#, Purchase Order, PO No., and other variations and then look to the right, below, above, or left to find the value you're seeking to capture.

The new code base for both single-user and multi-user installations comes on one CD or in one download and you choose your configuration upon installation.  This makes it easy to migrate project settings and batch information between the two environments for upgrades.  Customers with current support and maintenance agreements can upgrade at no additional cost.  If you're delinquent on your ABBYY MUA, contact us for an upgrade quote.  Other than needing to change your scripting from the FormReader specific syntax to either Jscript or VBscript, your upgrade should be pretty straightforward.

The single-user Desktop edition now allows for automatic exports of documents if their recognition threshold is agreeable to you.  The recognition engines are improved by another generation of development.

Full compatibility between standalone and distributed installations:

 

Project created in standalone installation can be used in distributed installation and vice versa. It allows quick scalability and updates to high-volume versions.

By-document processing - selected documents can be processed separately from the batch with changed priority.

 

Separate documents from a batch, which have nothing to verify, can be processed fully automatically in unattended mode.

 

Problem documents can be separated from main stream to the Exception Queue and processed by special operator.

Windows security support - FlexiCapture can use standard Windows security setting to identify the product users, which simplifies product setup.

Remote stations:

Scanning Station can be installed remotely and connect the server via HTTP.

Monitoring Station has Web-based interface and can operate remotely by using a Web browser.

Flexible integration and customization capabilities:

Web-service API of Processing Server allows using the capture service as an unattended component in external applications and workflows.

Capture process can be easily and flexibly customized by using scripting of main processing events including import, export, rules etc.

Separation of batches or documents by empty, bar-code or patch-code sheets during import.

Xerox DocuShare Release Notes

There's a new version just out, DocuShare 6.5.2, that works with newer OSs including 64 bit Windows and newer versions of databases that you may want to look into. Go to the DoUG site ( https://docushare.xerox.com/doug ) for downloads and documentation. There's also a recent update to the DocuShare Windows Client.

DocuShare and DocuShare 6.5.2 are available on all platforms and in French, German, and Spanish languages.  Existing customers with a current support contract can download the software for free. DocuShare 6.5.2 replaces 6.5.0, the first of the phased 6.5 releases.

What’s New

  • Cross-platform support: Linux, Solaris, and Windows servers
  • Support for PostgreSQL and DB2 databases
  • Availability of French, German, and Spanish language packs

DocuShare Outlook Client documentation

Customers have been asking for the best documentation available for getting the most use out of the DocuShare Outlook integration.  The best place for this information actually resides on your PC in the installation directory as ...

C:\Program Files\xerox\DSClient\DocuShareOutlookClient.chm

This, of course, requires the installation of the DocuShare Windows Client with the option to install Outlook integration.

DocuShare Email Agent Usage Guidelines

We've written an overview on how to use the email agent to fill in the gaps on Xerox' own documentation.  This one page overview will provide clarification on how to cc a copy of your email and attachments to your client account collection for more complete documentation and knowledge sharing.  This is a great feature that is underused by many customers.  There's also a note on automated filing of incoming email using the Outlook client.  The email agent doesn't require Exchange or Outlook.


Criteria First product updates

For those of you who have been using ABBYY FormReader Enterprise or ABBYY FlexiCapture with DocuShare, you'll be glad to learn that our DAVupDoc program now works with DocuShare 6.0 and later versions' new Content Intake Mode (CIM) feature.  This speeds uploads of batches of documents up to 50 times faster than our scripted method in DAVupDoc 2. 

DAVupDoc 3.1 retains the ability to run scripted uploads to all versions of DocuShare in interactive or batch command line mode while adding the ability to take your tab or comma separated variable (.txt and .csv) output and create a file that DocuShare can ingest using content intake.  We create a single XML file and zip it up with your documents and place it in the folder watched by DocuShare 6.X for content intake. We've added password encryption and enhanced the templates to house information for both scripted and CIM types of uploads for greater versatility.  The command line interface remains the same, but you may need to update any associated scripts to accommodate the CIM options.

If you're currently on annual support and maintenance for DAVupDoc then you're free to download the new version and install it, but you'll have to send us your new "software code" so that we can send you a liberation (license) key to enable it for more than just a trial.  Setup documentation is included and shows how to change your command line syntax for use with content intake.  If you have any questions or concerns regarding your application, contact us and we'll work with you.

DocuPage Pro v2.3 update

  • This new version adds checking for data types and field lengths to make sure your data is within constraints. 
  • The template now sorts your drop-down list fields and you can sort the fields which are displayed for your users. 
  • You can also now use list fields solely for specifying a collection level in the file path.  
  • We've added encryption to the template's password. 
  • When closing or saving your changes, we provide better template validation to make sure your documents will upload as expected.

Did you know that you can start DocuPage Pro with a filepath parameter to point to a common shared folder for user templates?  This makes updates easier than having to replace files on everyone's PCs.  You can change your DocuPage Pro shortcut to something like:

"C:\Program Files\CriteriaFirst\DocuPagePro\DocuPagePro.exe" "S:\common\DocuPage Pro templates"

When users select Template > Open, they'll see the shared resources.

Be sure to look into DAVLoader 2.0 for your other batch upload processes involving simpler methods of merely watching folders for new content and uploading the documents to a target collection.  This, too, has been upgraded to support DocuShare's new Content Intake Mode in addition to scripted mode.
